How to Write a Successful Blog

What does it take to write a successful blog?

I asked myself this same question when I began to consider what to write. However, before I embarked on my research for writing a successful blog, I wanted to learn more about what a blog is and its importance.

So, what is a blog?

After watching this video and doing some research, I figured I’d continue to ask myself questions to further my understanding of blogs. What’s the importance of a blog? Would the purpose of writing blogs just be to further my writing skills? Or, are there more benefits to writing blogs?

As it turns out, there are multiple benefits to blog writing, especially in the marketing field. So, I determined that writing blogs is a skill that college students, like myself, should learn how to do.

Once I confirmed the importance of blog writing, I took the next step in my new journey as a blogger. I started reading blogs by multiple people, and I did research on what it takes to write a successful blog.

Format

The format of a blog often determines if a person will continue to read a post or not. If a post lacks organization, the reader probably won’t be willing to take the time to read it. Using bulleted lists or subheadings will help the reader stay focused on the point of your topic. Plus, it will enable them to easily skim through the post and will ultimately be more convenient for them.

Content

Blogs need to be short, sweet, and to the point. Not only should the blog itself be short, but the paragraphs should be as well. Reading content on the web for a long period of time can be extremely difficult. So, a blog will be more successful if it is easy to read. A blogger can do this by using short paragraphs as opposed to lengthy, boring ones.

Another thing a blogger should think about is writing content that is relatable. People tend to enjoy reading things that they can relate to. Pick a topic that people will want to read and share with their friends. Also, people expect to read blogs that have an informal and casual writing style. So, write your blog accordingly. This makes the reader feel more relaxed and it will give them the desire to read your blog, not because they have to, but because they want to.

Although the style should be informal, it still needs to be well written. If you have multiple misspellings within your blog, people will notice. Having correctly spelled words and grammar is extremely important. So, to have a successful post, be sure to proofread a few times before you publish it.

Engagement

A blog must be engaging to capture the reader’s attention. Using links, videos, and pictures will keep readers interested in what you have to say. However, if a blog has too much then it may be too distracting and overwhelming to the reader.

You certainly don’t want your readers to be so overwhelmed that they look like this:

Long story short, if you can master all of these skills, then you have a pretty good chance at writing a successful blog.

Happy blogging, everyone!
